Concurrent session: Straight Talk: How Young Advocates Are Changing Systems for Today’s Highly Mobile Students

Barbara Dexter, Anchorage School District | Barbara Duffield, National Association for the Education of Homeless | Susan Weiss, Casey Family Programs

In many ways, poverty and instability are just the tip of the iceberg for highly mobile children and youth. Students who are homeless and/or in the child welfare system face numerous barriers in education. These young people are among those most apt to drop out, resulting in chronic under-and- unemployment and continuing the cycle of poverty. This session provides you with a unique opportunity to engage directly with young adults who can speak to the educational challenges and their successes -- despite the odds. Their insight will highlight strategies, programs and resources that made a difference in their educational achievement and that can inform philanthropic investments.
